Summary

You can join a BYODJ Night with just a party code and a name. We don't ask for your email, phone number or a password to join.

If you choose to save a profile, we keep your Google account ID (not your email, name or photo from Google), the display name you pick, and your scores.

Heads up: the top 3 dancers of a night are listed by name on public recaps, which may be found by search engines, and those names are kept for 12 months. Use a nickname if you'd like.

We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.

What we collect

When you join a night (no account needed)

  • The display name you type. A nickname is fine. If you leave it blank, you get a numbered guest label. Names are automatically screened for slurs and profanity.
  • The songs you add and your votes. Other guests see vote totals, not who voted for what.
  • A random guest ID, your name and the party code, stored in your own browser so you can rejoin if you refresh. This ID isn't a login.
  • A code stored on your device for each night. It lets you save that night to a profile later or remove your name from its recap. If you clear your browser data or switch phones, you lose that ability.

When the night ends

We save each person's result for the night, guests included: the name used that night, score, place, and how many songs they added. While a night is running, the queue (names, songs and votes) is temporarily saved so a server restart doesn't end the party.

For the song charts, we keep a record of each song that played: the song, artist, night and vote totals.

If you save a profile (optional)

  • Your Google account ID. This is a number Google gives us when you sign in. We don't receive or store your email, name or photo from Google.
  • Your display name and, only if you add them, an "about me", pronouns, flags, headline and avatar.
  • Your settings: the look you pick for your page, whether you show on public leaderboards, and whether your profile link works.
  • Your results from each night (date, score, upvotes, downvotes, songs added, place and which event it was), your badges, and when your profile was created and last used.
  • Guest book entries you write (the night, your mood, your message and your top song that night).
  • Your friends list and friend requests.
  • Friends you invited. If someone joins a night from your invite link and then adds a song or votes, we save that one invite so each friend only counts once. For a guest it's a scrambled code made from their phone's guest ID, never their name or the ID itself. It's deleted with your profile.
  • In-app messages we send you about badges, new nights and reminders.

If you make a host page (bars, nonprofits and party hosts)

  • Your Google account ID, the same as above, so you can manage the page. Signing in for a host page doesn't create a personal profile.
  • What you put on the page: its name, type, headline, "about us", address, social and website links, and a preset avatar or a logo you upload.
  • Notes you write on your nights' recaps, and the messages we send you about your nights.
  • A testimonial, if you send us one and we add it to a recap.

If you contact us or report something

Whatever you type in: your name, organization, email and message. The book-a-call form also asks for a phone number, the best time to call and the kind of event. Safe-space reports include which night it was about. We use this to follow up with you.

Basic technical info

Like most websites, our hosting and network providers keep standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested), and we use IP addresses briefly to prevent abuse, like too many sign-in attempts.

How we use it

  • To run the party: the queue, votes, live leaderboard and end-of-night results.
  • To keep your score across nights if you save a profile, and to show public leaderboards and event recaps.
  • To send in-app messages about badges, new nights and reminders. You can mute new-night messages in your profile.
  • To keep the community safe, including screening names and messages and acting on safe-space reports.
  • To answer messages you send us.
  • To run, fix and protect the service.

We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.

What's public vs. private

Top 3 dancers are public. The top 3 dancers of a night are listed by the name they used that night on public recaps (event pages, the homepage and the leaderboard). These pages are public and may be found by search engines. Those names are kept for 12 months. A guest is shown as plain text with no link or avatar. A recap keeps the name used that night, even if you change your profile name later.

During the night

Other guests see your display name next to songs you add, and your score on the night's live leaderboard. The host sees the queue and who added each song.

After the night

Guests' names aren't shown on songs publicly. If you've saved a profile and show on public leaderboards, your display name can appear as "added by" on top songs in recaps and leaderboards.

Some recaps are link-only (for example, private events). They aren't listed on the site, but anyone with the link can view them, and the people who danced that night get the link.

Your profile page

Your profile page shows your display name, avatar, stats, songs you added and recent nights. Pronouns, flags, headline and "about me" are optional, and if you add them, they're public on your profile page. Profile pages are not intentionally indexed by search engines. Anyone with your link can view the page. You can switch your link off in your profile settings.

Hiding from leaderboards

Saved profiles show on public leaderboards and recaps by default. If you turn off "Show me on public leaderboards", you're left out of them. On recaps of nights you were at, a top-3 finish keeps its place as "Private dancer" with your points but no name, link or avatar, so nobody else's place changes. You still show to the people in the room on the night itself.

Host pages

Host pages are public and can show up in search engines. Everything on one is public, including the address and links, along with recaps from that host's nights. Link-only recaps show only to the host while signed in. A host page never shows the Google account behind it, and hosts don't appear on dancer leaderboards.

Friends

You're only friends with someone once they accept your request. Friends can see each other's scores on the Friends tab of the leaderboard, even if a friend hides from the public leaderboards. Pending requests are only visible to the two of you.

Guest book

Only saved profiles can sign, and only for a night they were at. Your entry is public (on the guest book, that night's recap and your profile page) unless you sign anonymously. An anonymous entry shows as "anonymous dancer" and isn't linked to your profile publicly, but we can still see who wrote it, so we can act on safe-space reports. Messages are automatically screened for slurs and profanity. You can edit or delete your entries, and we can remove entries that break our safe space policy.

What stays private

Your Google account ID, your in-app messages, your contact messages and your settings aren't shown to other people. The BYODJ Night team can see stored data to run and fix the service.

Who we share with

We use a few services to run BYODJ Night:

  • Google sign-in, only if you choose to save a profile. Google's own privacy policy applies to your Google account.
  • Spotify plays the music. Song searches go to Spotify from BYODJ's own Spotify account, without your name. We never connect to your Spotify account.
  • Google Tag Manager on our public site pages (see Cookies).
  • Railway hosts our server and database.
  • Cloudflare carries traffic to our site and helps protect it.

Some pages also load fonts from Google Fonts, images from Spotify and Giphy, or a video from Vimeo. Like any website, those services receive your IP address when your browser loads them.

Legal and business transfers: we may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or if BYODJ Night is sold or merged with another service.

How long we keep it

Retention periods
WhatHow long
Tonight's queue, names and votesUntil the host resets the night at the end of the party.
Guest names (not saved to a profile)Deleted after 3 days. If the name is shown on a public recap (a night's top 3), it's kept for 12 months, then deleted. The place and score stay under a numbered guest label. A night can be saved to a profile during those first 3 days only.
Song historyKept for the song charts. Names are removed as described above.
Saved profilesUntil you delete yours. Profiles not used for 12 months are deleted automatically, along with their saved nights.
Host pagesUntil you ask us to delete yours, or we remove it.
Sign-in sessionsUp to 30 days, or until you sign out.
Contact messages and safe-space reportsUntil we delete them. Ask us and we'll delete yours.

When a profile is deleted, its past results remain but are anonymized. Deleted data may persist briefly in backups before it's overwritten.

Your choices and how to delete your data

  • Delete your profile: go to your profile and tap "Delete my profile". This deletes your profile, your saved nights, your friendships and your guest book entries, removes your name from songs you added, and signs you out.
  • Remove your name from a recap (guests): on the same phone you danced with, tap "remove my name" on the end-of-night screen, the event recap, the leaderboard or your profile. Your result stays, but your name is replaced with a numbered guest label. Lost the phone? Email us with the night and the name you used.
  • Hide from public leaderboards or switch off your profile link in your profile settings.
  • Edit or remove what's on your host page at /host/setup. To delete a host page, email us.
  • Mute new-night messages in your profile.
  • Clear the guest info stored in your browser by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
  • Access, correct or delete your data: email [email protected]. We respond within 30 days.

Security

We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information, such as encrypted connections and limiting who can access stored data. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

Age

BYODJ Night and saved profiles are for people 21 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 21, and in no case from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we'll delete it.

Cookies

  • Sign-in cookie: keeps you signed in to your profile for up to 30 days. It's only readable by our server and isn't used for ads or tracking.
  • Guest book heart cookie: if you heart a guest book note without signing in, we store a random ID in a cookie for up to 12 months so each browser can only heart a note once.
  • Browser storage: the party app saves your guest ID, name, party code and the codes for your nights in your browser (see What we collect).
  • Google Tag Manager: loads on our public site pages. It doesn't load on the party app (/join), profile pages, the guest book, or host and admin pages. It doesn't run any analytics or advertising tags. Loading it still sends Google standard request information, like your IP address and browser. If we ever add analytics, we'll update this policy first.

Opting out: you can block or clear cookies and site data in your browser settings or use a content blocker.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control: we don't currently respond to Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. We don't sell your information or share it for targeted advertising.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For material changes, we'll also post a notice on the site.
